ANPR for Shopping Centers
ANPR for shopping centers reads vehicle number plates at entry and exit with ordinary IP cameras and software. It can apply a free time window, open a barrier for an allowed plate, keep tenant staff separate from visitors, or simply log the visit. It runs on standard ONVIF IP cameras and an Android device on site, and no dedicated ANPR camera is required.

What the system does at a retail site
Reads the plate
A camera reads the number plate as the vehicle enters or leaves the car park.
Applies access rules
The software compares the plate with a time window, a tenant rule or another rule set for the centre.
Controls the barrier
If a barrier is connected, it opens for an allowed plate. A barrier is optional.
Records the visit
Entry, exit and duration appear in the operator panel.
Runs on IP cameras
Standard ONVIF and RTSP cameras. No dedicated ANPR camera is needed, and existing cameras can often be reused.
One device, two cameras
An entry and an exit camera can run on a single Android device on site.
What we measured
The figures below come from our own tests in September 2026, not from a manufacturer datasheet. They were measured on two Android phones with two 1080p IP cameras at 20 fps.
- Plate confirmation in a two-camera test (16 clips, 24 plates): 24 of 24 plates, 0 false reads, median 0.6 s.
- Plate detection per frame: 38-57 ms. OCR of a plate crop: 15-20 ms.
- One camera: 24-26 frames per second. Two 1080p cameras at once: about 8 frames per second in total.
- Keep the plate at least about 30 px high in the frame. Camera position and framing matter more than zoom.
- A plate was confirmed in rain at 02:37, and two more at night at 04:05 and 04:36.
- The software detects a stalled stream after 15 s without progress and reconnects automatically.

How does ANPR work for shopping centre parking?
A camera reads the number plate when a vehicle enters or leaves the car park. The software compares the plate with the rules for the centre, such as a free time window or a tenant rule, and then opens a barrier or starts a parking record. The operator panel shows entries and exits in one place, so visitor traffic can be reviewed without manual enforcement.
Can free parking be linked to a purchase?
Where a deployment needs it, a plate can be given a longer window after a purchase, for example through a connection to a point-of-sale or validation system. That is scoped during the site audit, because it depends on the system you already run and what data has to be exchanged.
Can tenant staff have different rules from visitors?
Yes. The software can apply different rules by group, for example a longer window or a separate area for tenant staff and a stay-based window for visitors. Where a group should be recorded only, without barrier control, that is also possible.
Does ANPR run on standard IP cameras?
Yes. The system runs on IP cameras that support ONVIF and RTSP, so it is not limited to dedicated ANPR cameras. Existing IP cameras that give a clear view of the plate can often be reused. Our tests used 1080p cameras at 20 fps, and no dedicated ANPR camera was needed.
How accurate is the plate recognition?
Our figures come from our own September 2026 two-camera test, not from a vendor datasheet. In that test the deployed setting confirmed 24 of 24 plates with zero false reads, with a median of 0.6 s from the vehicle appearing to confirmation. The test used 16 clips and 24 plates from an entry and an exit camera working together; a plate counted as correct only when both cameras agreed. That is a small sample, so we present it as a test result, not an accuracy percentage.
How is plate data handled under GDPR?
A number plate identifies a person, so it is personal data under GDPR. The system processes plate data locally on site, and retention is configured by the operator. We help customers put the required documentation in place, including the record of processing and the information clause.
What does the price depend on?
It depends on the number of lanes and entry points, whether usable IP cameras already exist, whether a barrier is needed, which systems the software must connect to, and the country of deployment. We prepare an itemised quote after a site audit.
